How long does it take to build a small business website? About a minute to 3, then an hour to publish

Real build times from thousands of sites built on Pindrop: 56 seconds for a designed template, 3 minutes for a custom AI build, and about an hour of changes before the owner-ready site goes live.

Ask a web designer how long a small business website takes and you will hear "two to six weeks". That is mostly waiting: for content, photos, feedback and approvals. The building itself is now minutes. Here is what we measured across sites built on Pindrop between July 10 and September 26, 2026.

Where the time actually goes

The build is the short part because the content already exists. A local business listing has the name, address, hours, phone, photos and reviews; the site is built from those. What takes the next hour is the part no tool does for you: changing a headline so it sounds like the owner, swapping a photo, fixing the services list, checking it on a phone.

  • Minutes 0 to 3: the site is built from the listing.
  • The next hour: edits. Most builders change the hero photo and the headline first.
  • Then: publishing to a preview link, sending it to the owner, and waiting for a yes. That is the part that used to take weeks, and it still takes as long as the owner does.

Why so many sites never get published

Of the builders who built at least one site, 35% published one. The rest usually stopped at the edit stage: the site was built, but it did not yet feel like something they could show an owner. The fastest way through is to change the three things owners notice first (their photo, their headline, their services) and publish; everything else can change after the owner says yes.

What it means for pricing

If the site takes an hour, you are not pricing hours. You are pricing the result and the monthly care. The most common asking price on Pindrop is $500 up front and $50 a month; see the live pricing study.

How we counted

  • Template builds: 77 designed-template builds with a start and finish time, median 56 seconds.
  • Custom AI builds: 211 builds with a recorded duration, median 179 seconds, 90th percentile 284 seconds.
  • Sign-up to first build and first build to first publish: every account created from July 10, 2026 that built (1,664) or published (586) a site.
